What is a cylinder lock?

A cylinder lock is a lock mechanism that consists of a cylinder and a housing (the lock itself). The cylinder can only be opened with a corresponding key. If an incorrect key is used, the lock will be blocked by pins, plates or balls. Only the right key fits exactly on all the different mechanisms and can therefore open the lock.

The difference between a (profile) cylinder and a cylinder lock

A cylinder lock consists of two separate parts. The lock itself – we call it a cylinder lock – and a (profile) cylinder. You need both to open and close a door. There is sometimes confusion about this. Below is an image to explain the difference.

The lock goes into the door and another cylinder fits into it. The cylinder is the part where the key is inserted. Nowadays all cylinders have a standard size and fit in all cylinder locks.

The difference between a security lock and a regular cylinder lock?

There are different types of cylinder locks. The main difference is whether you want to use the lock for an interior door or exterior door. Cylinder locks for interior doors are sufficient to lock a door, but you need special locks to keep burglars out. These locks are also security locks and have extra measures to prevent burglary.

Security locks comply with the SKG quality mark . This means that they are able to keep burglars out for a longer period of time. These locks are better protected against popular burglary methods such as core pulling. With an SKG approved lock you can live safely and your home is more resistant to burglaries.

Buying a cylinder lock – which one do I need?

We sell a number of different types of locks on our website. Below we will explain which lock you need for which application.

Buy a cylinder lock in only one size!

On our website we only sell 1 single size for cylinder locks. Namely PC55 . This means that the distance between the hole where the door handle goes and the hole where the key goes 55 millimeters . This is also called the lock recess.

In the past, locks had different sizes, but nowadays you only find this size in interior doors for cylinder locks.

The advantage of this is that all locks also have the same dimensions. Namely a front plate length of 174mm and 20mm wide and a total depth of 80mm. This size corresponds to the so-called Nemef 1200 series and is the standard size in the field of interior door locks.

What you do have a choice about is the color of the front plate. There is a choice of white , black or stainless steel . This is purely a matter of taste and often the color is chosen that best matches the color of the door.

Buy a cylinder lock, magnetic or non-magnetic

In addition to a choice between the different colors, there is also the choice between a non-magnetic lock (such as the 3 above) or a magnetic lock (such as below). 

The advantage of a magnetic lock is that it less noise and the frame is less damaged when a door is closed. That is why magnetic locks are increasingly used.

There is currently a choice of two different front plate colors for magnetic locks, namely black and stainless steel .
