What are door handles?

Let's start with the big question: “what are door handles?” Simple, door handles (also door handles ) are attached to the door so that you can easily open the door. Everyone knows this, but did you also know that door handles consist of different parts? Each door handle consists of the handle itself and the mounting. In general, the handles are the same on both sides, but you can choose to have a different inner door handle than the outer door handle. What types of door handles are there?

Door handles can be found in all kinds of shapes, sizes and designs. Whether you have an old or a modern door, you can find a matching handle for it. Here is a brief overview of all the different door handles that you can find in our range:

Just a brief explanation of these three different door handles. A rosette is a small round (or square piece made of metal or plastic. It has a hole into which the door handle fits, so that the rosette provides a good separation from the part of the handle that is in the door itself. In general, you need two rosettes per door.

Door handles on shield work from the same concept. However, there is one difference. Instead of a small round or square cover, a shield is elongated. The advantage of this is that a door handle on a shield is more secure. It is therefore always advisable to install additional security fittings for exterior doors.

Hole parts are simply just the latches. For example, if the latch is broken off, you can only buy a new hole part. This way you don't have to buy a completely new door handle set. Make sure that the hole part has the correct dimensions and turns in the correct direction. (see the section: left or right rotation )

Door handles for inside and outside

As discussed earlier, you can also attach door handles to the front door. It is important to realize that front doors must be better secured than the standard interior door. Logically, because it is the first door that burglars have to open to gain entry. Certainly in recent years, burglars have become a lot bolder and more ingenious (think of nuclear pulling, ). For this reason, we recommend that everyone install additional security fittings on every exterior door.

Most homes are now equipped with SKG-approved security fittings, but it is advisable to always opt for fittings with a three-star SKG rating. This fitting ensures that the burglar needs at least 5 minutes to open the door. For a burglar, every minute feels like an hour, so you can be sure that burglars will skip your house with an SKG*** security fitting. Other security measures include installing a door camera or a door lock holder . This allows you to always see who is at your front door and then decide whether or not to let this person in.

Check which way the handle turns!

Now that we've established your home's protection, let's move on to the second issue to consider when purchasing a door handle – the side the handle turns. But telling which way your door opens is more difficult than you think. After all, it differs from which side you look at it. That is why standard terms have been invented that are specified for each door handle. The standard ISO name for this is DIN and there are 4 variants:

DIN left inward turning
DIN right inward turning
DIN left external rotation
DIN right-hand external rotation

How do you know which of these 4 specifications you need for your door? A simple trick is to look at which side you the hinges of the door. And which side these are on. If you stand on the inside and you see the hinges on the right side. Then you have the DIN turning in on the right. Always check before ordering a door handle whether it is suitable for your door. In general, this does not matter much in web shops as they can supply both, but if you are in a physical store, this is useful knowledge.

In addition, when ordering door fittings, the hole part on the right or the hole part on the left is discussed. How can you check which one you need? With a hole part on the left, the hole part points to the left if it is normally attached to the door. The opposite is true for the hole part on the right. It may sound unnecessarily simple, but the last thing you want is a latch pointing in the wrong direction. Therefore, always check it!

Other things you should take into account

Then there are other things you can take into account when purchasing a door handle. For example, is it a door handle for the toilet? Instead of a normal door handle, you immediately buy a toilet door handle. This almost always includes a lock rosette, so that both have the same color and style. The same applies if you want to buy a different door handle for a door where a lock may be useful. Think of bedrooms or the storage cupboard. Here too, you would be wise to immediately purchase a door handle with lock fittings.
