Mortise locks

Deurbeslag-expert.nl is the place to order mortise locks. All mortise locks are from well-known brands. They are available in different sizes and in different colors. Mortise locks are the most commonly used types of locks for doors. The locks are so called because they are actually inserted. The mortise locks are inserted into a milled hole in the door, on the front side of the door (the side that falls into the lock). Here you will find further information about all types of mortise locks that you can order, security, lock recess and backset, commonly used abbreviations.

The convenience of mortise locks

Because the lock is inserted, you hardly see it. This allows you to enjoy the rest of your door fittings . You can mill the mortise locks into a door yourself, but you can also have this done. The main advantage of a mortise lock is that they offer a lot of security. For example, almost all locks have an SKG rating and therefore also comply with the Police Quality Mark for Safe Living (PKVW).

The security of these locks

Mortise locks are mainly used on interior doors , because this type of lock only secures the door in one place. If a mortise lock is used, it is often in combination with an additional lock . An alternative is a multi-point lock . These lock the door directly at multiple points, making it more difficult for burglars to force the door. What is also wise is to combine the locks with an SKG cylinder . This is how you make your own SKG lock that is highly burglar-resistant.

What is the difference between a mortise lock and a cylinder lock?

All cylinder locks are mortise locks, but not all mortise locks are cylinder locks. The cylinder lock is a category of mortise locks. In addition, a cylinder lock is often used as a lock on an exterior door, while a mortise lock is usually only used for interior doors. However, this largely depends on the type of lock, because there are plenty of locks that fall under the heading "mortise lock", but which can really be locked. You can find more about this under the heading “different types of mortise locks”.

Slot recess and backset

When ordering mortise locks, it is very important that you know which dimensions you need. For example, you have to look at the lock recess and the backset. More information about measuring these two sizes can be found in our article how do you measure door fittings?

The length between the door handle and any lock is the lock recess (or also center-to-center distance). The backset is the distance of the door handle and lock from the edge of the door. The first is the height within the lock, the backset is the depth of the lock in the door.

Important abbreviations for different types

There are three abbreviations that represent different types of locks. These are usually used a lot, which is why we explain them here.

  • PC lock – The abbreviation stands for profile cylinder, also known as cylinder locks. These are the 'normal locks' as we see them most often.
  • BB slot – The abbreviation stands for furry beard. This is an older variant. These locks usually require an old, longer key (a keyboard).
  • Toilet lock – These are locks for your toilet or bathroom. These locks are also called free/occupied locks.
