How Does a Door Closer Work?

door closer save energy, How does a door closer work, draft strip door

A door closer is a very handy product that ensures that the doors in the house always close properly. This way you can ensure that certain rooms remain at the right temperature and that the heat (or coolness) is not lost because the door remains open. Especially in winter, it is not pleasant if the door does not close properly and the cold comes in. Moreover, it is also a lot more sustainable because you lose less heat and therefore use less energy.

In short, a door closer is an ideal product for both the user and the environment. But how does a door closer work? I will explain that to you in this article.

The mechanism of a pusher

A door closer is a device that is mounted on the door. It consists of a casing containing several chambers and a spring that is screwed onto the door. When the door opens, a spring is tensioned. This spring naturally wants to release tension and the door closes automatically.

Naturally, the spring is not immediately released from tension, but this is done at an appropriate speed. Otherwise the door would slam into the frame. Oil pressure is used to gradually close the closer.

Difference between a sliding or scissor arm

There are two types of closers for doors, namely door closers with a sliding arm and door closers with a scissor arm . The way the products work is completely different.

How does a closer work for doors with a scissor arm?

Door closers with a scissor arm are the most common variants. Especially because closers are used on exterior doors. Exterior doors are often a lot heavier than interior doors and closers with a scissor arm generally have more pushing force . A scissor arm closer gets its name from the scissor mechanism that pushes the door back into the frame.

The disadvantage of a closer with a scissor mechanism is that the arms of the closer are visible when the door is closed, because the arms are then perpendicular to the door.

How does a sliding arm door closer work?

Closers with a sliding arm are less common and are mainly suitable for lighter doors . They owe their name to the fact that there is no scissor mechanism, but the lever that pushes the door into place slides along rails.

The advantage of this closer is that it is not visible when closed, because the arm of the closer runs parallel to the door.

Adjust door closer correctly

A door closer is easy to adjust. You can leave the door open a little longer ( closing delay ) or slow down more when opening it ( opening damping ). The latter in particular is ideal if you do not want a door to be thrown open.

With most door closers you can adjust how quickly the oil drains per room
