An espagnolette is also called a turning rod or rod lock. With an espagnolette lock you are able to close double doors or windows from the inside. Technically speaking; A bar lock is the lever that, through a rotating or lifting movement, sets in motion a vertical top and bottom bar that are on windows or doors. This will be the case for many people, especially if they have double garden doors or windows. But how does a bar lock actually work?

For both doors and windows

There is a difference between a window espagnolette and a door handle. For example, in the Netherlands we call rod locks for French doors with a long top and bottom position "push rod locks". For windows they are also called cross handle or half handle pagnolet, usually these have a shorter top and bottom bar.

Operating a turning rod

You can easily lock and unlock bar locks. It can be operated with a half or cross handle, a lever or with a special key. As already mentioned, the bar lock functions thanks to an upper bar and a lower bar.

How do you install a bar lock?

Installing a rod lock on your patio doors and windows is an effective way to make your home a bit safer. But how does mounting an espagnolette work? On this page we explain this step by step, making this job easy for everyone. Don't have any bar locks at home yet? Then you can easily order these from door fittings expert.

At what height do I install a bar lock?

Like other locks, an espagnolette usually mounted on a door at a center height of 1050 mm, and 50 mm from the front edge of the door. If you have a dome door, always mount the lock on the door that falls into the dome. Make sure that the screws do not get into the glass of your door. Once you have determined these dimensions, mark the top, bottom and screw holes of the bar lock closure.

Determine the length of rods

Then measure the distance between the bottom of the bar lock and the sill, and the top of the bar lock and the frame at the top. Add 50 mm to the measured values to determine the lengths of the rods. After this you can saw or grind the rods to size. Determining the rods for the espagnolette can be so simple.

Attach the rotating rod to the door

Secure the rods in the rod lock. Make sure that the handle of the crank turning rod or the lever of the pump rod lock is closed. Slide the guides over the bars and open the crank or lever again. After this, you can screw the handle espagnolette or pump handle onto your door. Make sure that the bars run in a straight line. Place the guides 50 mm from the lower and upper sills. Do you have a second conductor at the top? Then place it exactly between the espagnolette lock and the top guide.

Attach strike plates

Finally, you will attach the striker plates. You do this with the holes on the side of the door. If necessary, you can carefully close the handle bar lock or pump espagnolette to see where exactly the holes should be located. Then mark the holes and extend them approximately 12 mm. You can then screw on the closing plates and mounting your espagnolette is a success!

Install the window espagnolette

an espagnolette window works in much the same way. Because windows are often smaller in size, you can place the guides closer to the frame. The handle or pump espagnolette is usually placed in the middle of a window.
