Shield Door Fitting Measurement

Measuring shield, measuring door fittings

Measuring the shields or the shield door fittings is not really difficult. Indoor door handles are available in two variants. Door handles on rosette and door handles on shield . With rosette door handles, the door handle is mounted on a small round or square plate. The plate for the lock or toilet closure is separate from the door handle.

With a door handle on shield, the door handle is mounted on a (often) steel plate. The hole for the key or the closure for a toilet lock are also mounted on the same plate.

When you think about shields and measuring door hardware, you might think about choosing, positioning, and installing shields (the plates that cover the door handles and locks) and door hardware (the handles, knobs, and locks themselves). Measuring the shield door hardware is important to ensure that the hardware fits and conforms to the door and the shield is positioned correctly. This may also include considering the distance between the lock and the door handle, the thickness of the door and the style of hardware to match the overall design of the door and interior.

Door handles or knobs on a shield are suitable for both interior and exterior doors, but pay attention to the security that a set offers. Measuring shield door fittings is important before you make the purchase. If you buy a set with a rosette, the dimensions are not important. The rosette can be placed at any desired distance from the knob or handle.

In this blog article we discuss the different sizes of shields, namely:

  • PC – Profile cylinder
  • WC – Toilet or bathroom closure
  • Keyboard key
  • BB – Furred key
  • Blind

These dimensions are also called the slot recess , center-to-center or center-to-center size.

The type of lock

First of all, it is important to find out which type of size you have. The PC size, profile cylinder, is the most common. A toilet or bathroom is usually closed with a toilet lock, this is what we call the toilet size. Finally, you can also have a variegated beard (BB). You will not find furred shields in our range. A keyboard key is a lock that uses an 'old-fashioned' key, where the lock hole has the shape of the key.

Another type of shield is the blind shield. This shield has no keyhole and therefore has no further dimensions. These are used when you do not need to be able to lock a door.

Calculate the slot recess/center-to-center size

To calculate the correct dimensions, always calculate the center-to-center size. This means that you always calculate the distance from the crank hole to the lock hole. The handle hole is the part into which the handle falls, the lock hole or keyhole is the hole at the bottom of the shield through which the key passes.

Below you can see how the dimensions are calculated for each type of lock.
