Door holders

It is a common problem. You are going to work or out for a day and you want your house to be well ventilated - so that you can come home to a fresh home. But you don't want to just leave the window open, because you don't want someone to break into it. Or someone is at your door and you would prefer to first open the door a little to see if your visit is welcome. How can you safely leave your window open or the door safely ajar? The solution is a gap keeper. This ensures that the window or door can be left ajar, but cannot be opened further. Read on for an overview of different types of gap holders and what you should pay attention to before purchasing.

Advantages of gap holders

The gap holder is an important part of the door fittings for your home. A gap holder is a small purchase, but it can still mean many benefits for you. Here is a brief overview of everything you can do with a gap keeper:

  • You can safely leave your window open without having to worry about burglars.
  • Your home is safely supplied with fresh air.
  • Especially during cold nights, an open window can let in too much cold, fresh air - with a door vent you can better regulate the temperature.
  • You can first open your front door a little to see who rang the bell.

What should you pay attention to when purchasing?

If you want to purchase a gap keeper, it is important to pay attention to the following things:

  • Does the aperture holder have the SKG (Foundation for Facade Construction Quality) quality mark? This quality mark gives an indication of how burglar-resistant the product is. This quality mark is mandatory for new construction under the Safe Living Policy. (NB every door holder in our webshop has the SKG quality mark)
  • Do you need it for window or door? Always check the specifications of the gap keeper carefully to see what purpose it is intended for.
  • How far do you want the holder to open? For doors this is normally 8-17 centimeters.
  • What material do you want? Metal is always recommended for security purposes. But if you only want to be able to leave the window ajar, plastic is sufficient.

You can simply install most gap holders yourself. With a screw/drill, a Phillips screwdriver and a measuring tape you can attach everything to the door in a short time.

The gap holders fall within the main group of hinges and locks . More information about our hinges and locks can be found on the relevant page.

Finally, we would like to provide you with additional information, because we often see that there are many questions about gap holders . frequently asked questions below and answered them directly.

Which gap keeper do I need?

This is probably the first question you should ask yourself, which one do you need? First of all, you have to choose between a gap keeper for doors or windows. We actually only offer stand holders for doors, there are some that can also be used for windows, but this is not optimal. All our gap holders are SKG approved, which means that they are of optimal quality. An SKG certification means that the product has been extensively tested. You can find more about the SKG certification in our blog article about SKG.

How does a gap keeper work?

A gap keeper ensures that you can only open your door a little, which increases safety because no one can enter your house from the outside. But how exactly does a gap keeper work? A gap holder is mounted on the wall or frame and the door itself, the holder has a small extendable part that is pulled out as soon as the door is opened. Because it has a limited extendable section, the door (or window) cannot be opened completely.

What types of gap holders are there?

There are different types of gap holders, for example there are classic holders that you still regularly see in films. These have a chain lock that you slide into the holder when closing the door. Today's aperture holders have an element mounted on the frame and on the door. There are some kind of rails on the frame, and a protrusion on the door that slides into the rails when the holder is in use. Do you want to open the door completely? The rails are then put aside and the door with the protrusion can be opened as usual.

Does a security guard increase the security of my home?

Yes, we can say yes to that. A crack stand holder ensures that no one can simply enter your house without you wanting to do so, so these holders are real additions to the security of your home. Together with security fittings and door spies, door vents are the most important security measures for your home.

Types of gap holders

As previously indicated, you can find two different types of door holders: for windows and for doors. It's important to keep this difference in mind – a door aperture keeper generally cannot be installed on windows and vice versa. You can also find gap holders in various materials, sizes and shapes.
