Door spies

It's always nice to know who is at your door. Because sometimes you would rather not open the door. Consider, for example, door-to-door salespeople who sometimes come by almost every evening. Or if you have a detached house and you want to know who is at the gate. Or you live in an apartment complex and the street door is far away from the door of your home. In all these cases it is useful to have something that lets you know who is at your door - i.e. a door spy.

Door spies – What can you do with them?

With a door viewer installed on your door you have many new possibilities. You can communicate with the people at the door without having to open your door. A door spy is also ideal for elderly people who sometimes prefer not to open the door when it is dark at night. Here is a brief overview of what exactly you can do with a door viewer:

  • Speaking to guests at the door
  • See who is at the door
  • Take footage from the camera

Door spies are used to – as the name suggests – spy on who is at the door. So that you, as the owner of your home, can see in advance who is at your front door. This way you can decide whether the guests are wanted before you open the door. If you see that the guests are unwanted, you simply do not open the door.

Type of door peepholes

There are a number of different types of door peepholes. In principle, all door peepholes can be divided into two different classes:

  • The door spy that only allows you to see who is at the door - these are analogue door spies .
  • An interactive door spy that allows you to communicate with the person at the door - these are the digital door peeps .

The standard door viewer is, as it were, a small viewer that is installed in your door. This is located at eye level and allows you to see through the lens who is at your door. The glass is curved in such a way that it provides a wide viewing angle.

Unlike analog spies, the digital spy is a camera. You place this in the door. The camera is connected to a screen that you can install indoors. This means you don't have to look through a small hole. The camera therefore provides greater ease of use and is ideal for the elderly or children.

For more information, see our blog doorbell with camera , where we discuss special doorbells that are equipped with cameras. In this blog you will also find an extensive comparison table.

Specifications to look out for

Before you buy a door viewer, it is important to know what exactly you should pay attention to. To start, you need to ask yourself whether you want a standard door viewer or camera. A standard door viewer is generally cheaper and you don't have to worry about replacing batteries. It is also very simple to use: you look through the hole and you know who is at your door. For standard door peepholes you should pay attention to the following:

  • Thickness of the door
  • Diameter of the viewing hole
  • Viewing angle (how wide can you see who is at the door)

A camera, on the other hand, may be more expensive, but it gives you more ease of use. The screen is large and there are many additional functions available, such as interacting with your guests through a speaker, opening the door with a button or even seeing who is at your door on your phone. Because of the larger screen and the extra functions, a camera is very suitable for the elderly. If you want to buy a door viewer with camera, you should pay attention to the following:

  • What additional features do you need?
  • How big should the camera be (should it be noticeable or not?)?
  • The size of the screen

Buy your perfect door viewer

With a door spy you know exactly who is at your door. This way you never have to open the door again to see who exactly is ringing the doorbell. So very safe! If a door viewer is not quite what you are looking for, you can also look for a door window holder . This leaves the door ajar so that you can first see who you are dealing with.

Although this does not give you the same benefits as a digital door spy. This one records images for you. So you can see who it is remotely and even save material. For other solutions, see our hinges and locks .
