About ABUS

ABUS is a company that specializes in all kinds of different types of locks, such as window and door locks, but also bicycle, scooter, motorcycle and boat locks. Abus is a German supplier founded in 1924 and located in the town of Wetter (Ruhr) in the Ruhr area near North Rhine-Westphalia.

The name ABUS stands for August Bremicker und Söhne KG, named after August Bremicker (the owner and founder) and his sons. Together they founded the company by creating the “Iron Rock”.

The beginning of ABUS

When they first started there was a lot of competition, but the ABUS company was so good that it quickly grew to 30 employees! Therefore, the company purchased a location on Hegestraße in Volmarstein, which remains the same location to this day. Around 1938, ABUS had quickly grown to approximately 300 employees.

After the Second World War they made a new start that today forms the foundation for the ABUS company we know today. A lock they created to celebrate their 25th anniversary is still a well-known favorite, the Diskus Padlock. This was released in 1949 and is still extremely popular today, and is still being produced at full capacity at the Hege branch.

In 1958, ABUS was one of the first locksmiths to bring brass locks onto the market, which have now become very popular with many different manufacturers. This same year, ABUS started creating locks for bicycles. In addition, they introduced the first U-lock on the market in 1971, best known as Bicycle Lock.

In 1961, ABUS started producing door cylinders, the most important part of the modern door lock. They did this in collaboration with the company Cisa, a well-known Italian company.
